i hear voices (proper ones)

Is it some sort of vibe I give out? Could it be my aura? Or is just that there’s too many weird people out there? Almost daily I have people come up to me or just pass me by and say something to me. Random stuff:

Scene: the super market
I’m just walking out with my shopping while some other guy is walking in. As he passes me by he says loudly “Yes, I’m gay”. I keep walking as if nothing happened and try my best to not respond. I so wanted to ask him if he wanted a medal.

Scene: the street
I’m on my way home from the super market (again) and this time I’m with my brother. As a group of people pass us by one of them says something I don’t understand to me. I ignore him like I usually do (I’ve mastered this art) and then he goes on to say “Oh no, wait, he’s not Chinese”.

Scene: walking past the Palace Pier
I’m going out with my brother for lunch somewhere in town but since the weather is so nice we decide to walk along the seafront for a bit. Right in front of the Palace Pier is a group of girls wearing pink cowboy hats (a hen party hint). One of them is standing right in front of them dancing to some weird music playing only in her head as she rubs her own breasts. I can’t help but stare at them, she’s staring back at me (out of all the people walking by) and goes “I’m the only gay in the village”. I laugh at her and keep walking (I couldn’t help but laugh). My brother didn’t even understand what she was saying (i think she was drunk, or high)

Scene: waiting to cross the road
I’m on my way to work and usually when I’m walking anywhere on my own I have my MP3 player on to keep me entertained. A woman next to me says something to me so I pause the MP3 player and urge her to repeat what she said. “Your hair looks very nice!”. I smile, say “thanks” and put my music back on. (Okay this is not weird, but just a compliment I suppose)

Scene: walking home after a night out
I live within walking distance to almost everything in Brighton (it’s not that big a place anyway). So as I am walking home after a few drinks a bunch of girls is walking in the opposite direction. One of them waves at me. I look as puzzled as I could possibly look and do a confused kind of wave back at her. She tells me “You HAVE to come by the shop where I work. You would love it. It’s over there called [...]” and then continues to walk. I didn’t even bother remembering what that place was called. I am curious what kind of shop it was though.

And these are just a few I can remember from the last week. Is it just me this happens to? Who knows what else people say to me when I have my music on and can’t hear them…

  1. That’s pretty funny most of those. May I offer some insights? I don’t know why I’m asking, no matter what you say I’m going to tell you what I think anyway.

    1. He probably saw your gaydar perk, so instinctivly you checked him out and he misunderstood your motivations for checking him out.

    2. With your fringe, dark straightened hair and nice skin tone they probably swore at you in Chinese so that you’d react in a way they thought funny, or they muttered some racist anti-Asian comment before realising that you’re not Asian.

    3. Drunk chix, need I say more?

    4. You do have nice hair, I wish mine looked like your but without all the effort that you obviously go to.

    5. She probably doesn’t care what you like, she just wants you to visit her shop and buy something damnit! lol

Probably the strangest random comment anyone has ever made to me was an old man who was reading the newspaper in the Doctor’s waiting room. He peered up from his paper as I sat down, “Shame about the Titanic, innit?”

Having worked as an Assistant in Nursing at a place that cares for the mentally unwell and having worked in hospitality I’ve recieved many strange comments, but that one about the Titanic at the Doctors from that normal looking man threw me more simply because I wasn’t expecting it.

However, I think I’m forever going to remember, “I’m going to vegemite you c**t!” from one of the more aggressive residents at the mental health facility.
